Our most popular tour for views of the rapids!

Experience the power of the Class 5 rapids from the rim of the Niagara River Gorge with a New York State Licensed Hiking Guide. Your Niagara Falls vacation will not be complete without exploring the Niagara River Gorge below The Falls. Hike 410 stone steps into the Niagara River Gorge. Learn about the history of Devils Hole, the Niagara Gorge Railroad Route, New York Power Authority Power Plant and other interesting facts about the nature surrounding the gorge. The trail can be very narrow in some spots along the river while other areas require navigating through rocks and tree roots. Your guide will offer tips so you can best maneuver through these areas. We will stop along the hike to take photos of the mysterious aqua blue swirling water. The  trail leads to the famous Whirlpool, where you’ll admire the twists and churns of the rapids, hear the roar of the river and see jet boats challenge the rapids. Spend some free time for independent exploration or just relax on the open “butterfly” landing rock formation. From there we will take a different stone staircase 400+ steps back up to the gorge rim (this can be strenuous, but we can stop several times along the way). Once we reach the gorge rim, we will view the Whirlpool rapids from the rim of the great gorge. Finally we will take an easy and enjoyable walk along the rim back to our original meeting spot at Devils Hole State Park.

Note: While the trail is mostly smooth, this hike does have some very narrow single-file sections and requires stepping over some large rocks. On occasion, for your safety, your tour guide may need to alter the tour route due to rock slides or trail closures by the New York State and Niagara Falls Parks Departments.

Niagara River history and other strange stuff!

Take the new stone staircase 425 steps down to the lower Niagara River Gorge and below the Whirlpool Bridge. Your New York State Licenced Hiking Tour Guide will lead you along the Niagara River where you’ll discover some interesting remains of the Niagara Gorge rail trail. New rock climbing scramble opens in 2025!

Artpark is located along the lower Niagara River in Lewiston, NY. Artpark is primarily known as Western New York’s largest concert venue with an indoor theater and outdoor amphitheater, but Artpark also offers great hiking trails. Artpark is spread over 150 acres and your New York State Licensed Hiking Tour Guide will help you make the best use of your valuable vacation time. Artpark is filled with history dating back to A.D. 160 and has been in continuous use for the past 2,000 years to transport products throughout the Great Lakes. You’lll see interesting and interactive outdoor visual art and music installations. From there we’ll take a three-mile round trip hike along the lower Niagara River and under the Lewiston / Queenstown Bridge, view the Brock’s Monument across the river in Canada and see the mirroring United States and Canadian Niagara power plants. Along the hike your guide will tell you some interesting stories about the river, Artpark concert lore, underground railroad, US president’s assassination attemp and other true or untrue tales.

NEW for Spring 2025! Artpark has built an adventure rock climbing SCRAMBLE up the Niagara escarpment. The scramble uses strategically placed boulders in irregular stepping patterns to reach the top of a Niagara River overlook. Built into the SCRAMBLE is a paved winding path if the rock climbing becomes too strenuous. The scramble will be included as part of this Artpark Tour.

Your guide will also explain where you’ll find the Freedom Crossing and Tuscarora Heros monuments in The Village of Lewiston and several free local art and history museums to visit. While in the Village of Lewiston visit local gift shops, craft breweries, coffee spots and famous ice cream and custard stands. Your Explore Niagara NY guide will be happy to suggest lunch and dinner options to best suit your foodie desires and budget.
